Disgaea Mayhem builds guide: the gun and Criti-Damager setup that carries the endgame, plus enhancement priorities, evility keepers, and Battle Buddy picks.

Criti-Damager breeding, enhancement priorities, and the rank 40 gun setup.

At A Glance

A Disgaea Mayhem build stacks layers on N.A. — weapon class, item rank, enhancement points, Innocents, and Character World evilities — not a locked job. This page maps campaign vs endgame targets and the order to stack them.

The layers a build is made of

Six layers, roughly in the order they start mattering. If your damage feels flat, you are missing one of these rather than needing a better weapon.

Levels are the layer that does nothing

Reaching Lv 9,999 is a gate, not a power spike. Levels unlock content and feed Reincarnation stacking, and that is close to the whole of their contribution. Any plan that reads "level up more" is the wrong plan — the correct answer is almost always more Innocents or more enhancement points.

Four slots, one of them a weapon

N.A. carries one weapon plus three armour or accessory slots. Every one of those four can hold Innocents, and every one takes enhancement points, so the armour slots are not filler — they are three quarters of your Criti-Damager capacity.

Campaign build — what to run before the credits

During the roughly 20-hour story there is very little to optimise, and trying to optimise early is how you accidentally delete the difficulty. The campaign build is three decisions.

SlotCampaign choiceReasoning
WeaponWhatever has the most skill slots — sword if you are still learningSkill count comes from item rank, so a higher-rank drop beats a familiar class
Armour ×3The highest numbers you own; no armour mastery existsNothing to optimise — equip and move on
Battle BuddyOne bonded monster, any classYou need a Magichange burst, not a collection
MultipliersCheat Shop EXP slider + I Demand Triple EXP! at the AssemblyThe only two things that change campaign pacing

Play the class you enjoy, not the meta one

Class matters far less than gear during the story, and every class clears it. The sword is the most forgiving thing to learn dodge timing and boss armour breaks with; the gun is what you will end up on later. Cycle all seven on early trash and commit to whatever feels right — the walkthrough covers the story route itself.

One habit to build early

Hold sprint, press heavy. The dashing area attack that produces is your fastest wave clear and your reposition in one input, and it stays your primary clearing tool through the deepest Carnage floors. Nothing else in the campaign build is worth practising this much.

Endgame build — the gun setup

Everything below unlocks after the credits. Carnage mode itself gates behind a chain: finish the story, pass the bill for the postlude stages, clear those, complete the Super Overlord tier of the Character World, and own a rank 40 item — then the Carnage bill becomes available. The difficulty jump is steep, with the first Carnage stage around level 1,200 against postlude stages at roughly half that.

Why the gun and not the sword

Two things decide a class here: how fast its sprint-heavy dash clears a floor, and how strong its mid- and late-ladder skills are. The gun wins both. Dubhell Catharsis at rank five carries the early and mid game, and Cocytus at rank seven is widely treated as the strongest weapon skill in the game — the transition is a boss-killer that also makes early Item World floors trivial. The sword remains the better class to *learn* on; it is simply not the fastest to farm with. Full comparison on the tier list.

The belt shortcut for item ranks

Chasing rank 39 and 40 gear directly is slow. The efficient route is a belt: grab an Aura Belt early, run its ten waves through to the Uber Mesh, and clear that to get a rank 40 belt. A rank 40 item in hand is what lets you pull the rest of your rank 39 equipment, and it is also one of the Carnage-mode unlock requirements — so this single detour clears two blockers at once.

The final fight, for scale

The hardest encounter in the game sits at the end of Carnage mode. With the setup above — rank 40 gun, Cocytus, capped crit, full Criti-Damagers — it dies to a single skill, at maximum star difficulty. That is the ceiling this build is aiming at, and it is reachable inside about 30 hours of total play.

Enhancement rules — where the points actually go

Item points from Item World dives are spent in the Enhance menu, and the spending order is not a matter of taste. Two stats have hard caps that turn into multipliers once reached.

Disgaea Mayhem Enhance Item menu with HP, ATK, DEF, MOVE, CRITICAL, RARE and POP Level costs beside a Spirit Gun carrying Cocytus
  • Do01Critical first — the cap is 99, and at 99 every hit you land is a critical hit
  • Do02Movement second — the cap is 200, reachable across four maxed pieces alongside crit
  • Do03Attack third, with everything left over
  • Do04Raise POP Level to 8 on every piece — that is your Innocent capacity
  • Do05Push rarity to at least legendary; stat gains land only at rarity 25, 50, and 100
  • Do06Never grind rarity from 50 toward 100 point by point — nothing between the thresholds does anything
  • Do07Apply the same priorities to all three armour pieces, not just the weapon

Why critical outranks attack

Attack adds. Critical multiplies, and once you are at the 99 cap it multiplies *every* hit — which then stacks with Criti-Damager Innocents and with Fatal Strike. Pouring points into attack before capping critical means you are adding to a number that is about to be multiplied by a smaller factor. Movement is second because the 200 cap comes almost free while you are maxing crit across four pieces, and mobility is what keeps you alive on Carnage floors.

Item levels and the Level High Score

Equipment reaches level 999 in theory; most players plateau somewhere around 700–800. The Item World result screen tracks a Level High Score, and you only gain further item levels by beating your own deepest recorded floor in that item — which is why committing to one weapon beats restarting the curve on every shiny drop. Mechanics in full on the Item World page.

Innocents — the actual damage layer

This is the part most players underestimate. Once you look at an optimised loadout, nearly every Innocent slot holds a Criti-Damager — the crit-damage Innocent, often written Critical Damager — and with eight slots across four pieces you are looking at roughly 31 stacks of it. Innocents, not the weapon, are what take you from "clearing Carnage floors" to "one-shotting the final fight".

Disgaea Mayhem Innocent Farm with capped Criti-Damager Innocents in the warehouse and a Gladiator breeding pair in the farm slots

The breeding loop

Level any single-stat Innocent as high as you can — Gladiator, Sentry, and Dietician all work, and they climb into the tens of thousands — then subdue it. Subdue any Criti-Damager as well. Put both in the Innocent Farm and clear stages; a short postlude stage you can end almost instantly is ideal. Criti-Damagers breed with stat Innocents, and the offspring spawn far above wild values — eventually 50 at a time. Slot a value-50 Criti-Damager into an item, kill it inside the Item World, and it comes out at 100, the cap.

What refuses to breed

The trick does not work universally. Lifestyle Guru (EXP gain), Mana Amasser, and Water Infused will not breed with stat Innocents, so those have to be farmed the slow way. Fortunately you need very few of them — one Mana Amasser on your familiar, and a capped Water Infused only if you are pushing water-damage evilities in deep Carnage stat farming.

Duplication, if the mystery room cooperates

Fill one piece with eight Criti-Damagers and dive it looking for the duplicator mystery room — a successful duplication doubles your stack instantly. The Uncharted Waters evility raises mystery-room appearance rate by 50%, and reports from the English release suggest the duplicator NPC only appears inside rank 40 items, so do not count on it before then. If it never shows up, the breeding loop above gets you to the same place with more stages and less luck.

Skip EXP Innocents entirely

EXP Innocents are more annoying to farm here than in previous entries, and once the Cheat Shop multiplier and the triple-EXP bill are running you will cap a level inside a single fight anyway. Weapon mastery Innocents are the same trap — the Character World hands out mastery in bulk, so farming them is tens of hours spent on something you can buy in twenty minutes.

Evilities worth building around

Evilities are permanent passives. N.A. learns only a couple by levelling; effectively everything else comes from the Character World, one unlock per tier, and higher tiers also grant the unlocks from every tier below. Start at the Prinny tier and work downward until a tier reports nothing left to learn.

Battle Buddy setup

Your familiar is not a damage slot — it is a utility slot. It needs one Innocent and a handful of evilities, and beyond that its gear genuinely does not matter. Because monster evilities are unlocked by reincarnating a monster into a class and levelling it, you collect them by cycling classes rather than by hunting drops.

One Innocent, one weapon, done

The only Innocent your familiar needs is Mana Amasser — mana is the hardest resource to farm and Character World tiers cost enormous amounts of it. Criti-Damagers on a familiar do nothing for you. Give it a rank 40 Carnage weapon if you happen to have one and stop thinking about it.

Which familiar to settle on

A top-rank rifle demon is the general pick, because it Magichanges into a gun — which matches the class you are most likely running. In practice you will barely use Magichange once your own numbers are large, so treat this as a mild preference rather than a requirement. Recruiting and ranking monsters is covered on the change character page.

Build order

The order matters because several layers multiply the ones after them. This sequence starts the moment the credits roll.

  • Do01Breed Criti-Damagers first — they are the layer everything else is measured against
  • Do02Level one weapon deep in the Item World instead of switching on every drop
  • Do03Run the Aura Belt to Uber Mesh route for a rank 40 belt, then pull rank 39 gear from it
  • Do04Farm Character World from the Prinny tier down, collecting evilities as you go
  • Do05Clear the Super Overlord tier for Infinite Reincarnation and the Carnage prerequisite
  • Do06Buy weapon mastery in bulk at the top Character World tier — 100 levels per clear
  • Do07Cap critical, then movement, then dump the rest into attack across all four slots
  • Do08Unlock Carnage mode and farm Carnage enemies for the 10M / 10M / 1B stat transfers
  • Do09Cycle Reincarnation with Infinite Reincarnation equipped once the mana cost bottoms out
  • Do10Unlock Cocytus on a rank 39 or 40 gun for 1,000,000 enhancement points

Build mistakes to avoid

  • Avoid01Dumping enhancement points into attack before critical and movement are capped
  • Avoid02Pushing rarity from 50 toward 100 point by point — nothing lands between the thresholds
  • Avoid03Leaving POP Level below 8 and losing Innocent slots you already paid for
  • Avoid04Farming EXP or weapon-mastery Innocents instead of using the Cheat Shop and Character World
  • Avoid05Loading Criti-Damagers onto your familiar, where they do nothing
  • Avoid06Switching weapons every time a higher tier drops, restarting the item-level curve
  • Avoid07Treating levels as a power source — they gate content, they do not build damage
  • Avoid08Skipping Character World because it looks optional; almost every evility lives there

Disgaea Mayhem builds FAQ

What is the best build in Disgaea Mayhem?

A rank 40 gun with the Cocytus skill, every slot filled with rank 100 Criti-Damager Innocents, critical capped at 99 and movement at 200, and Infinite Reincarnation equipped. That setup one-shots the hardest fight in the game. Class comparisons on the tier list.

What raises damage the most in Disgaea Mayhem?

Criti-Damager Innocents. Capping critical at 99 makes every hit a crit, and stacking Criti-Damagers across all four equipment slots multiplies that — far more than any weapon upgrade.

How do I spend enhancement points?

Critical first up to 99, movement second up to 200, then attack with the remainder. Keep population at 8, push rarity to legendary, and remember stat gains only land at rarity 25, 50, and 100.

Which evilities should I equip?

Infinite Reincarnation, Equipment Adaptation, Fatal Strike, Big Game Eater, and Cold Blessing. Infinite Reincarnation comes from the Super Overlord tier of the Character World and effectively doubles your stats when stacked.

How do I unlock Carnage mode?

Finish the story, pass the bill for the postlude stages at the Assembly, clear them, complete the Super Overlord tier of the Character World, and obtain a rank 40 item. The Carnage bill then becomes available.

Can I change my build later?

Yes, at no cost. Weapon class is an equipment choice rather than a locked job, weapon mastery is stored per class, and Innocents can be moved between items.

Do I need a specific Battle Buddy?

Not really. Give it a Mana Amasser Innocent and collect utility evilities like Uncharted Waters and Incognito by reincarnating monsters into different classes — see Magichange.

How long does an endgame build take?

Around 30 hours of total play including the roughly 20-hour campaign, if you follow the build order rather than grinding levels. The Innocent breeding loop is the slowest part.

Does the sword work as a build?

It clears the campaign and early post-game comfortably. For Carnage-tier farming the gun is faster because of its sprint-heavy area clear and Cocytus — see the sword guide for the honest version.
